Endorsed brand

See also: endorsement architecture

An endorsed brand has its own identity while visibly carrying the parent as a guarantor, as in Polo by Ralph Lauren or Courtyard by Marriott. The product brand can address its own audience while borrowing credibility from the parent.

In practice

Endorsement is useful when entering a market where the parent has credibility but the wrong associations. The naming job is to produce a name that stands up alone but does not clash with the endorser when set beside it.

Marriott's FY2023 filing lists Delta Hotels by Marriott and Protea Hotels by Marriott among its brands. The pattern is the rule: a name of its own, followed by a fixed, visible guarantor. That is how a hotel brand acquired or built for a different guest can borrow the trust of the parent without taking on its image.

In a naming project the endorsed brand sets two tests at once. The name must stand alone, and it must still read well beside the endorser, in every market where both will appear. What goes wrong is the clash at the seam: a name that sounds fine alone and awkward in the lockup, or one that is close to an existing name in the parent's own portfolio. The endorser line also has to be a rule, written once, otherwise every product negotiates its own version. See brand architecture for where this sits, and Brand hierarchy: branded house or house of brands? for the comparison.

Where this sits in the process

The studio treats this as part of a single run rather than a separate service: the category is read, the creative direction is chosen from what the research found, candidates are generated in volume and then cut against criteria that were written down first. See how the studio works for what that produces, or the naming module for the stages themselves.

  • Brand architecture: Branded house, house of brands, or something between: how portfolio structure decides what a new name is allowed to do.
  • Sub-brand: When a product deserves its own name and when it only needs a descriptor: the sub-brand decision.
  • Branded house: One name on everything: how a branded house concentrates both equity and risk, and what it means for naming new products.

Frequently asked questions

What is an endorsed brand?

An endorsed brand has its own name and identity while visibly carrying the parent company as a guarantor, as in Courtyard by Marriott or Polo by Ralph Lauren. It speaks to its own audience and borrows credibility from the parent.

What is an example of an endorsed brand?

Marriott’s FY2023 annual report lists Delta Hotels by Marriott and Protea Hotels by Marriott beside brands such as Courtyard and Residence Inn. The endorsement lends trust to a brand that can still speak to its own guests.

What is the difference between an endorsed brand and a sub-brand?

The direction of dependence. An endorsed brand has its own identity and could in principle walk away from its endorser. A sub-brand is partly defined by its parent and cannot.

When should a company use endorsement?

When the parent has credibility in a market but the wrong associations for the product, or when a new brand needs trust at launch but should still stand on its own.
